955BE best cooler

I've been having some trouble finding a cooler for my AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition. Now my ASUS M4A78PRO supports AM2/AM2+/AM3 and is advertised as socket 940, but after updating my bios after purchase of the phenom, cpuz picked the socket up as 939. After my install of windows 7, cpuz picked up the board as socket 938.

I'm pretty confused with what i available for me at this time. So many questions I have...

My phenom being an AM3, is it possible to use an AM2/AM2+ 940/939 cooler for it without any trouble?

I'm assuming there's no physical differences between the sockets or mine wouldn't have changed three times..

Also, what kind of cooling would be the best for me? I've considered liquid cooling, but that kinda sounds like biting off more than I can chew.

I've been looking at the spinQ

Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme

I'd like to OC this thing as much as I can without damaging it.

Thanks in advance,

  1. If u want sheer performance so buy this heatsink:

and equip these 2 fans in a push/pull config. You will be extremely happy with the performance then.

    Happy Overclocking.

Well, AM2/AM2+ has 940 pins, while current AM3 CPUs have 938 pins. The AM3 standard itself accepts 941 pins, suggesting that future AM3 CPUs will be AM3 only and physically not fit into AM2/AM2+ boards. Anyway, as far as the coolers go, 939/AM2/AM2+/AM3 all use a similar mounting bracket. If a cooler fits socket 939, it will fit on AM3.

As far as the best cooler, you may want to look up reviews on places like frosty tech as they just focus on coolers

You can also check out X-bit labs as they do some cooler round ups every now and then.
  3. On my 955BE I am very happy with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus. Check the reviews on Newegg and you will be convinced.
