Laptop is Slow

I need help with my HP Pavilion ZV 6000 processor AMD64 laptop, I'm running windows xp pro. I installed Norton internet security, scanned it and it resolved the problem but my laptop is still slow. Can somebody give me some steps that i can follow to increase my speed. One more thing, every time i get on internet explorer it starts to freeze.

Also, ditch Internet Explorer; it is the number one way Windows computers get infected. Use Firefox or Chrome instead.
