I have a Q9550 and now we need a second computer   I am confused between the I7 and my 9550. Which one would be better for a gaming rig with no overclocking, at least for now, maybe in the future if the new games become a problem for the machine in a stock config. The budget for the new rig is $2500.00 max, preferrably less, but will go to the limit if need be, and that will need to include a 24"LCD monitor, probably Benq I think I read i was the best monitor, keyboard, card reader, mouse, speakers, etc. I thought there were problems with the DDR3 memory are the bugs out of it yet? Also how is the cooling on this new stuff? Please recomend an appropriate case to keep all this stuff cool. Please recommend the best rig for this budget. May need to crossfire in the future also I think a 1000 watt psu Thanks

I would go with i7:

cpu: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz

mb: ASUS P6T Deluxe
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

ram: G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1333
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

gpu: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 X2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

hdd: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 590
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

psu: CORSAIR 750TX 750W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

This comes out to $1654.

evonguggs rig is nice but the storage can be improved (otherwise itll bottleneck your rig).... get 2 smaller hard drives and stripe raid them...

and spend more money on the case...cases under 60$ cant be trusted....

but if you only had to do one of my suggestions do the 2xhdds raid...or buy a wd raptor!

+1 to evongugg but he needs a 1tb hdd and a 300gb velociraptor:

and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

for that kind of build youd want a fast hdd and one for storage

Get a nicer case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not some cheapo! get a cosmos 1000 or an Antec 1200 or 900 or a Thermaltake VH6001BWS Armor+:

wow the post glitched iand i ended up with a double post! sorry bout that!

+1 4 ryan

you should spend good money on faster storage...chincing storage is a big mistake, whats the fun in a fast gamer if maps/worlds still take forever to load...and separate data drives means you can game while running a huge download or upload...

OK: A couple questions
1) I don't know what raid is can someone explain it to me?
2) Will that PSU be enough to crossfire say 2 4870x2 if need be later on?
3) The DDR3 ram are the bugs out of it yet?
4) Which 24" monitor would you recommend?
I have narrowed the case down to 3
1) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite...
2)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
3)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Which would you use if this was your build?
December 4, 2008 7:10:05 PM

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_indepen...
You dont need raid so dont bother
2. im not sure but i doubt it. a 1KW will probably do
3. DDR3 is fine
4. If this was my computer i would use : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
but again its up to you, if you live near best buy (or anything similar), go there. if you see one you like one of them, price it and get the model number. Go on newegg or tiger w/e you use look it up. Do they have it? and what price is it? thats the best way to figure it out. the monitor i suggested has a built in webcam and 1080p rez so it will use that 4870 to the max! btw it aslo has builtin speakers
5. If i had to chose which case id get the one that suits your needs if it were me id get either the antec 1200 or the Cosmos. If i had to choose one itd be the cosmos Bcuz i have a cooler master case and it rocks but its mid-tower and you probably wouldnt want it. anyways if your intrested its the CM-690 by cooler master
December 5, 2008 4:57:02 AM

with all that processing power you want fast storage...otherwise your games will take just as long to load..
December 5, 2008 8:57:49 AM

Thanks for the info I will build it on newegg and post it to make sure it all works I might wait to order though to see if prices come down a little

Exellent build! You are going to be able to show it off to everyone and rip through games like a hot knife through butter! The gpu dillema i depends on what u want. Nvidia is usually favored when it comes to games in fps but a 4870x2 is the BOMB! SLi form what ive heard doesnt scale as well as xfire so its all up to you. 2 gtx 260's are going to take up 4 slots on your motherboard and 1 4870x2 is going to take up 2. the 4870 will be cooler as only 1 card vs 2. how many other things do you plan on putting in your motherboard?? wifi cards, sound cards, tv tuners etc get the 300gb raptor bcuz its only $50 more for 300gb instead of 150 but if you insist the 150 will do fine. as for the ram i dont think youll need the 1600mhz ram you can save ~$60. by getting 1333 for gaming youll see a difference of ~1-3 fps if $60 is worth 1-3 fps go get it if not this is fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... G.SKILL is a good trustworthy brand not some cheepo brand like a-data or super talent. i like the keyboard. the ONLY thing you are missing is a heatsink/fan for your cpu i dont know how the stock lga1366 fans work so if you are running well i dont think they sell 3rd part heatsinks for i7's yet (well good ones anyway) other that youre set and that will be one amazing build
December 6, 2008 9:31:39 PM

EDIT : ^^^^^^ so if you are running (HOT) well
December 8, 2008 9:32:59 AM

Ok I will make some changes and probably go with 1 4870X2 and later on CF another one if need be. This will so blow away what we are used to using. My wife has been using a 7 year old Dell 8200 P4 so when she gets this one it will be night and day. I have a old 22" screen that came with the afore mentioned Dell, its not lcd its a regular old screen what will that do if I wanted to run 2 screens for my cad stuff on my Q9550 HD4870X2 comp? I am using a Benq 24" now solo

The only thing left is the GPU trying to descide

December 9, 2008 4:25:42 PM

The build looks great and should score very well in the benchmarks. Good job!

The only thing that might help ever so slightly is getting 1600MHz RAM for the additional bandwidth. I doubt you'll notice a difference though.

I agree on the memory it's not that much more but will probably help in the future if not now. What do you guys think on prices coming down after Christmas? I can wait a little but not for 3 months
December 9, 2008 8:49:15 PM

Let me get out my crystal ball.... :)

I don't know what prices will do, but the general hardware price trend is always downward. It just depends on how long you want to wait. Newegg had some great deals for black Friday and cyber Monday. You can keep an eye out for deals, but I say if you find something you like and the price doesn't set you back in your chair, buy it.
