On a whim, without actually putting any thought into it (hey, the holidays do that to me), I purchased a BFG GeForce 9800GTX+ OC. I never realized how honkin big this sucker is. It just barely fit in the PC. Seeing as I needed to disconnect the power to my two DVD RW drives to use the dual 4 pin Molex to single 6 pin PCI Express adapter, I thought I'd be set... minus power to the two DVD Drives. Well, I was wrong.
My PC is a Gateway 838GM and, apparently, the power supply (?) isn't enough. This is an example of the Power Supply it's running (http://www.911forpcs.com/838gm.html)
Am I correct in thinking that power supply isn't putting out enough juice for the video card? Am I correct in thinking that if I can find a more poweful replacement power supply that it should get the card running? And if so, where in the heck can I find a power supply that will have what I need, and still fit in the alotted space inside the PC?
I originally got the PC from Best Buy and after having their geek squad replace the mother board (took a month to get it back from them, but it was still under warrenty) I'm leery of bringing it in and asking them to replace the power supply.
Any thoughts, suggestions, etc?
I mainly use my PC for video editing, gaming, and graphics design, just incase you were wondering.
Yes, it is more than likely your power supply. I think the recommended is close to 450 or 500 with the 12 rail being at least 26.
From a quick glance, I'd say that you'll have no problem finding a psu that fits your case. Most manufacturer's have the measurements listed on their site.
If your Best Buy stocks the same psus that mine does, don't bother with them. Some were OK, but all were way overpriced, and non had a single 12 rail(which is much better).
Something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703016), will suite you just fine (and looks to be the same exact size as your current one). Unless you plan on future upgrades, then I would think about something a bit heftier.
Just check the connectors to make sure that whatever you get will give you all of the cables you need. And, I would suggest making sure that whatever you get has 2x6 pcie connectors. It's healither all around to use the exact power plugs a pc part wants.
