Hi All;
I have a computer running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 with 512 MB of RAM. I have shutdown all applications other than the F-Secure Anti-Virus Spyware application which is running in the System Tray. Sitting on the Desktop with the Task Manager open, you can watch the PF Usage climb from starting at 557 MB up to 1.43 GB. It takes about 30 minutes, but just keeps climbing. The performance of the computer gets very slow. Then later on you will receive a message that there are insufficent resources to run any application. How can one determine what the problem is? Thanks...

Task Manager should be able to indicate which application/service requires so much memory. Make sure you check the Peak memory usage and Virtual Memory Size columns.

Hi GhislainG; Thanks for the reply. There isn't any one application that is requiring so much memory. There are many small memory usages like the following:
wmpnetwk.exe 12,236K
fsgk32.exe 7,280K
svchost.exe 5,508K
MsMpEng.exe 5,312K
fssm32.exe 4,144K
taskmgr.exe 3,952K
svchost.exe 3,804K
winlogon.exe 3,684K
fsguidll.exe 2,948K
explorer.exe 2,528K
FSM32.exe 2,108K
and then another 8 items at under 2,000K
and the rest are under 1,000K
Commit Charge: 2005M/2010M
Peak Memory Usage: 2053796
Virtual Memory is set at: Custom size:
Initial size (MB): 766
Maximum size (MB) 1532
Nothing seems out of order from what I can tell, but I don't know. Please advise.... Thanks...

You can't have a commit charge of 2 GB and no memory leak. From what column is the memory usage that you provided?

Well, that may be a clue as to the problem then. The Memory Usage that I provided is from the Windows Task Manager under the Processes Tab and the values are from the Mem Usage column. I could do a print screen and attach a .jpg of the Windows Task Manager if that would help. I just don't see anyway to do the attachment in this Reply????

In Task manager, click View, Select Columns. Check the additional Peak memory usage and Virtual Memory Size columns. Those might prove very useful.

Well, that was quite informative. I found that under the VM Size column there was an application called "jqs.exe" (Java Quick Starter) taht had a value of over 1 GB. I selected the "jqs.exe" and then clicked on "End Process" and the PF Usage immediately dropped down to 698 MB. That's very interesting. I wonder if this application is corrupt, faulty or what???

If you can live with slower Java applications startup times, then disable it.

Thanks GhislainG; I guess that will have to be done if I want to use this computer. I am going to unistall the Java and then re-install and watch to see if it still uses over 1 GB of Virtual Memory. Thanks for all your help...

You don't need to uninstall Java. You just need to disable Java Quick Starter.

I will do the disable thing if the re-install doesn't work. Thanks...

512mb is not enough ram to run today's programs. For $25 you can get a 4gb kit. More ram will make a big difference in performance.

Hi geofelt; Thanks... I understand that and I will be getting more RAM. Good advice...
