Hi,

I've run into some extra money and wanted to get the high end pc that i've always dreamed of having but could never afford, i upgrade every year so I'm not worried about it being out of date in a year.

I will be using the pc to overclock, play games, and watch movies.

My budget is AU $6000 (About US$3800)

Here is my parts list, feel free to add, subtract of completely change:

CPU: Intel C2D E8600 $415

MOBO: Asus P5Q Deluxe $259

Ram: Corsair 1066 MHz 4GB KIT $200

HDD: 2x 150gb Velociraptor Raid 0 $538
4x 640gb WD Raid 1 $330 (Already have one)

Opt: DVD+RW (Already have one)
Blu-Ray Writer $280

Case: Antec 1200 $269

PSU: Corsair HX-620 (Already have one)

GPU: 4870x2 $800

LCD: Acer G24 24" LCD (Already have one)
40"+ LCD HDTV 1080p $1800

Sound Card: Asus Xonar D2X $215

Speakers: Logitech Z5500 $399

Headset: $250 (Not sure what to get yet, will only use for gaming, suggestions?)

KB: Razer Lycosa $113

Mouse: Razer Lachesis $90

Cooling: Noctua NH-U12p $89
GPU Cooling?
More Case Cooling?

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit (Already have)

So can any changes be made?

Is it worth building an i7 computer if its only a pc to be used for a year, 18 months at the most?

hey mate, i don't know if you've looked around and know this, or if it will even bother you with all the money you have, but the website www.staticice.com.au compares the prices of the component you type in and list the state and store name. helped me when building my computer but i guess i was on a lot stricter budget than you :p

All those parts are high-quality, and the mix is compatible, as far as I can tell. However, I'd downsize a few of the parts and keep the money in the bank for the next PC.

I'm not convinced that the P5Q Deluxe and Noctua NH-U12P fit together. For example the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro does not fit on the P5Q Deluxe because that MB has weird cooling pipes getting in the way. I'd get a P5Q Pro instead. No such issues and it's cheaper too.

I don't see the logic of using RAID 1 to play games.

E8600 costs a lot more than E8500 for little extra speed.

"I will be using the pc to overclock" is silly, TBH. It's like "I'll be using this car to have something to wash and repair". Overclocking is a way to a goal, not a goal in itself. Do you actually have a goal to achieve by overclocking? Overclocking an E8600 will do absolutely nothing for you in games or movies.

I don't think you need extra cooling. Maybe an extra case fan or two if you overclock a lot.

Maybe you should go for 2 Nvidia GTX280's. If you look around you can see quite good scaling resulting in better performance than the 4870x2. this again i say due to the lack of a price limit on the components, but the 4870x2 is a really great card :D i recommend the PALIT 4870x2 its cooling is just amazing... bordering on scary lol

Would it be worth it for me to buy the 30" dell monitor and crossfire two 4870x2 and maybe upgrade psu to the hx-1000?

I really want the best of the best.
