Application not found

Hello,
I'm running windows xp office 2003 and for some reason when I click on a app icon in the start menu such as excel, word etc. I get an error message that says (application not found) I thought my files were missing but when I go to explorer all my files are there and if I open a file the application associated with it opens fine. Why can't I no longer open the applications by clicking on the icons
