Loss of search function in xp

My computer has the "Search" icon in the start menu, but when I attempt a search my system crashes/freezes/locks up until I do a ctrl-alt-delete restart. Every other function works well. Any ideas?

I would scan your system with several different spy/malware scanners. I have had this problem before due to a malware infection (it's been awhile so i don't remember
the exact infection). Cleaning the system brought back a proper search function without crashes. Worth a try.
