First Build - 109 degree C CPU

I just completed my first build and turned it on to configure the BIOS. After a few minutes of going through menus the system shut off. I suspected overheating. I waited a while and turned it back on and CPU temp was at 99C and rising and finally I turned off at 105 or so.

What could I have done?
I have MOBO: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P and Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz. The processor is a 65W and my power supply is a 750W is that a problem? Perhaps I used too little thermal compound? I read all over about how too many people use too much.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is your cpu fan working?

Yes it is. I am removing and rapplying the thermal paste as I believe I was using too much.

Any other ideas? I have seen some info leading me to believe that it may be a faulty reading.
