i say get at least a P5KPML/AP mobo, 2*2GB 800MHZ Ram from like corsair or OcZ, get a 9800GTX or 9800GTX+(If my calculations are right) and a 650W PSU from coolermaster or rosewill
there should be at least 50 - 100 bucks left over i think
good enough to get a decent case
Are you planning on overclocking? If you're not, a 2.4GHz processor will slow you down in games. Anyway, if you are going to try overclocking, I would try to pick these up also:

Rosewill PSU's are generally crap. Coolermaster only makes a couple decent models too. You're best off sticking with Corsair, PC Power & Cooling, etc...
The Antec 900 & 1200 cases are both nice, but the 900 fits into a $1000 budget a lot easier. The 1200 is quite a bit bigger than the 900, but the 900 would be plenty big for the above build.
I'm guessing by "the thing that allows you to use both cards for gaming? " you mean crossfire? Yes, the motherboard I linked above is crossfire compatible.
For your build, the 1200 is too much. I just bought the NZXT Tempest for $99 at www.buy.com. It's got plenty of room.
Im using the same motherboard as you as well...but not an ATI card, OC'ing the Q6600 to 3.0ghz is no problem. I've seen videos of people getting them to 3.6-4.0GHz. Im planning on getting the Q6600 too and OC'ing to 3.0ghz and leaving it there.
