Lost volume control on taskbar in Windows XP Prof, after IT reformatted my hardd

Hello. The IT dept at my company recently had to format the hard drive of my laptop to clean out many problems. I now have no volume icon in the taskbar. When I went in through Control Panel /Display, I received this message:
"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel."

Have you installed all the necessary drivers for your model laptop and OS given from laptop mfg. website ? Once Audio drivers are installed you can open Control Panel, Sound, set the sound card that is installed in laptop and checkmark to show volume control in tray.

IT should've done the drivers install as part of a complete OS installation.
