depends on the settings and what games you are playing.
a 9800gtx can handle anywhere from 1440x900 up to 1920x1080. anything above 1920x1080 with settings turned on high and AA turned on, i would get a different card.
majority of people now have 1680x1050 monitors, and depending on the games and settings your playing again, it should be quite playable.
let say, if i am going to play crysis or any high end gaming out there, so i should set the resolution in the game according to my monitor and everything should be ok right?
you can play crysis fine at a decent resolution (ie1680x1050) with that 9800gtx, it'll be a matter of adjusting graphic settings (there's quite a few in crysis) to get a balance of fps & quality. i've got a pair of 8800gtx's in sli and they can't handle 'very high' settings at 1920x1200. i stick with 'high' settings for the sake of playability.

you should always set your games or resolution in windows at all times to your monitor's native reso. it looks the best in that res.
