Hey guys, i just recently bought a zalman 9700 LED... and it says max rpm is 2800, but mines never go near that on maxed, its 2500 rpms....Any suggestions how to fix this or is this normal? or must i do something? thnx in advance ...

Hi have a look in your bios under hardware monatring or sum thing like that and you mite be able to adjust your fan speed. I have the 9700 and i hate it man it's to lowd at full speed for me and it is no good with quads. wen i had a duel cor it was good but wen i put it on my q6600 it was crap.

in my bios its at 100% but still running 2500rpm wen its rated to run 2800 rpm....


what do you mean its crap for quads?

He just means that there are better coolers out there and it's not as good as he'd like for his hotter quad.

Chances are the mothermoard's just not putting out quite enough juice to hit 2800rpm, although I doubt that extra 300 is going to make a massive difference to your temps, which are what by the way?

I have similar cooler ( NT version), and I have to asure you that 2500 RPM is pretty much enough. I've put mine to some tests:
1) stock speed PII 940 pulled off the cooler conector form MB (NO fan). Run Prime for 1 hour - temps kept under 59C !!!
2) put back 4pin conector to MB, set fan speed to 1400 RPM (from BIOS) Ultra quite at this speed. Run prime for 1 hour - temps kept under 46C
3) set fan speed to max (NT ver = 3000 RPM) Sounds like boeing 747. Run prime for 1 hour - temps kept under 43C.

Conclusion: there is NO point pushing the fan furhter than 1400 RPM (or maybe 1800). At 1800 is still quite.
I keep mine CPU at 3.6Ghz and the fan speed at 1400 RPM, but I set it to spin on when temps reach 45C, it goes to 1800 RPM until it gets to 50C then 2000 RPM and prety much stays at 51C-52C at 2000 RPM
It gets to high RPM only while gaming, yes it's not quite, but my GPU cooler is louder that 2000RPM Zallman,

The reason I asked was because the 9700 is an overpriced and underperforming heatsink. I recommend sending it back for an Xigmatek HDT-s963 or HDT-s1283, both of which are cheaper and will perform far better.

that is what i meen thanks. By the way mine is the NT to.
You shud see how much dust gets stuck in thos fins to. I put mine in the dish wosher lol.

@Raven...I would send it back and get one of those if this was a bad fan but its pretty good, il keep it, thnx tho...

It is a decent little cooler, a little bit better than an Arctic Cooling 7 Pro and a bit behind a Xigy HDT-s963 which is not bad at all. I was just trying to save you some money.

Np bro, i just wish i can get this thing to 2800rpms just to know the temps then..i wouldnt leave at that high cause its too load.. +1
 
Two thinks come to mind:
(1) that "2800 RPMs" may be what it is rated at at Max 12 V ie 12.6V ( or even higher as one fan I looked at was rated up to 14V). What is your 12 V, may be just under 12 V ie 11.8. Who knows a half a volt may be about 300 RPMs???
(2) Believe these use a coil where the emf induced depends on the RPMs, more a question but what is the accuracy of these, 3%, 5%, or even 10% - Unknown as not often published.

Could be, and probably is, a factor of Both.

If you wanted to (Not worth it nor would I) you could make a little pigtail and run the sense and Gnd to the mother board HSF connector, and the +12 V and Gnd from the fan to an adj 12 V PS and adj between 11Vand 13 V. AS I Said is it worth it

Most are not two concerned as long as it does it job. But the ONLY way to verify RPMs would be to use an instrument designed to measure RPM's - not realistic in this case.
