I am building a dual xeon system using 2 Xeon L5410's that I got for free. I plan on using a Supermicro X7DCA-L-O and adding 12 GB of Kingston DDR2 ECC ram along with a HD 4850 Vid Card, and a SATA dvd burner. I will also re use a case and hdd. My question is will a Antec 550 watt powersupply be enough to run the system. Another question is about heatsinks that will work with socket 771, I need suggestions on good heatsinks. Thanks for the advice.

My advice is that you sell them on Ebay and get a Q9550 and P45 mobo. You can then get DDR2 800 RAM instead of the DDR2 ECC 667 RAM. You can easily get a good CPU cooler for it. You can even OC if you want to. The $$ saved on the P45 and DDR2 800 is well worth it.

For those Xeons, You could get the Intel Skulltrail mobo at $599. At least you would have a standard ATX mobo then.

Well I am going to use the comp as a video station and do some gaming on it as well. I wouldn't be building a dual Xeon system if I hadn't recieved the cpus for free, I would have just built a core2duo machine.

aren't the xeon's more of an enterprise CPU meant for like workstations? I would suggest selling them and then you would have like $750 which could easily be spend on an i7 920, or a 940 or, throw in some money and get the i7 extreme (however, the 940 and the extreme aren't the best value)

also, if you go for the 920 you'll still have enough left over for a very good X58 motherboard

Except that I am primarilly using this machine for video work and gaming would be a bonus.
