Overclocking AMD Phenom II x4 965

Hi guys,

I have a build that I want to over clock.

I want to overclock my AMD Phenom II x4 965.

Can you guys give me any tips where to start?

I've read that I should definately get a aftermarket cooler. Any recommendations?

Also, I have a ASUS M4A79XTD EVO , with a bunch of overclocking utilities, should I use this?

I'm not too famliar with voltages or multipliers or vcore, but I plan to do some reading on this soon.

I am also planning on adding some 120mm fans in my case.

I will also overclock my 4890 HD using the ATI overdrive in Catalyst control center.

Thank you for any input, have a great day.

  1. Well, for overclocking your Phenom II X4 955, look at this guide:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/258573-29-overclocking-black-edition-guide

General rule - DON'T use CPU overclocking software through Windows 7, unless you can't overclock through the BIOS because it doesn't support overclocking or is locked.

Adding more fans would be a good idea, overclocking can heat up your CPU quite a bit.

An excellent aftermarket CPU cooler would be the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus.
  2. I haven't had a problem using the AMD overdrive software in Windows 7 on my PhII X3 720. Unlocked to Quad and clocked at 3.5 Ghz pretty easily. CPU voltage at 1.4625v.
  3. Gryphyn, your core voltage is a little high. What are your load temps running?
