I run PS CS4, Lightroom2, Architectural Cad, no games, no real 3d modeling. I have a system I built three years ago which just doesn't do the trick these days:

So this is what I am thinking (today at least): Advice please

New:
Asus P5Q
Wolfdale 8500
Thermalright ultra 120 heatsink
(3) G.Skill 4GB 2x2 1066 (not sure about which to use /different timings & voltages, greek to me)
Vista Ultimate 64
Total $845 for what seems to be a big upgrade

Or should I go to a core i7 system?

Re Use:
Thermaltake Kandalf VA9000BWS Full Tower Aluminum Case w/Side Panel Window (Black)
PC P&C 750 Power Supply
WD 300 GB Velo Raptor (already ordered)
(2) Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB Serial ATA 10,000RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer and Serial ATA Signal Cable Bundle
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3400832AS 400GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer
evga 9800gtx ??????? Should I bite the bullet and go to the gtx??
Sony FD MPF9201121-1/MPF920-Z (Z/121) 6082 1.44MB 3.5in Floppy Disk Drive (Black)
Dual Layer DVD?RW Bare Drive (Black)

you said no gaming and you want 9800gtx?
its a good idea to go with core i7, it will last you longer

i would go with
core i7 920
x58 mobo
3x2 ddr3 1600 memory (i7 have tipple channel memory so make sure to buy 3 sticks)
ati 4850 (on the 10th they come out with 8.12 catalyst, they said new drivers will allow pc to use those 800 stream processors to help encode videos and such so you can use your graphic card for other things not just games)
vista 64 bit

Thanks. I already have the 9800 as well as all of the stuff listed under "reuse", so hopefully it is ok
Like most I tend towards the latest, but is it common wisdom that the core i7 will be better for the aps I am running, or is it just insurance against obsolescence?
