About two months ago, the cpu fan just got really loud. It gets really loud when the cpu usage goes to about 50 percent and up. Once it goes below that, the fan goes back to being pretty much silent. I rang the company for the computer and they said that since I bought the computer, it has been building up with excess programs and things like that. They said to format the computer and it should fix it. I really doubt this is the problem because when the computer is idle, the cpu usage is about 1-2 percent. I dont want to format the computer and reinstall. I thought that buying a new fan was a good idea. I just wanted to know some other peoples ideas before I bought the heatsink\fan for $50-80.
Thanks

First off, try cleaning the dust out with a can of compressed air.

If that does not help, you will need to post more information (CPU, Socket Type) before we can recommend a new cooler for you.
Also, install Coretemp or a similar program and see just how hot your CPU is getting.

I recently replaced a Q6600 with a Q9550. The first thing that I noticed was that the heatsink part of the HSF is about half the size of the one that came with Q6600.

If you have a 45 nm C2D or Q, that could be part of the problem. The better HSF's come with 12 cm. fans. 12 cm. fans, for the same airflow, tend to be more quiet than the smaller fans.

If you are running a late model Intel CPU at stock speeds and have no intention of ever overclocking, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro for about $30 will give you a substantial boost in cooling.

I have a Intel Core 2 duo E4300 1.8ghz processor. the socket is a 775. I used speedfan to check out the temps, when the cpu is idle, it is about 50 degrees celsius. When im playing a game, the fan maxes out at about 3500rpm and the temp for the cpu is about 70-75C. As soon as I close a game, the temp drops down from 75 to 50 in about 3-4 seconds (this might be normal but i thought it was a bit fast). Should i get a new fan or could it possibly be a dodgy heat sensor(i dont Know)? any advice appreciated.

Use RealTemp to monitor temperatures. 50 C at idle seems kind of high. You might want to look at the air flow in your case a little more closely and make sure the HSF is properly installed.

One thing you can do is lay your PC on its side (motherboard down), take off the side panel, then run it and check the temps. If they are substantially lower, you probably have an air flow problem.

I tested the airflow by taking the case off and the temps and fan were the same. Does that mean the fan is broken and the problem is not the airflow? The HSF was also put on properly (the screws were in place and tight) so I think it must be the fan. There were no changes in the environment or anything like that when it started happening. Thanks again

Yes, 50° iddle and 75° load is very hot for your CPU at stock.
Are you looking at the CPU temp or the Core Temp?
Download Realtemp or Coretemp and see what they tell you.

If Realtemp and/or Coretemp are also showing these high temps, it would probably be a good idea to upgrade your CPU cooler.
The Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, Xigmatek s1283 and the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer are all great coolers.

Real temp is showing the same temps as Speedfan (50 Degrees). Should I get a new fan. If so, could anyone give me any links to an Australian online shop.
Thanks
