Ive been trying to research whats the best option as far as processors go, but unfortunately most of it isnt worded for idiots. As I understand it, the intel quad is better, but they talk about the q9300, what about the q8200, and is a quad at 2.33ghz better than a duo at 2.9ghz?

It depends on what your doing. The 2.33Ghz quad will only outperform the 2.9Ghz dual if it's in a quad threaded program which well over 90% of programs aren't. Most professional software such as 3ds Max will show large gains with a quad core, video encoding and file compression like winrar does as well. However almost all games will run faster on the 2.9Ghz dual than the 2.33Ghz quad right now.

So really which one is better depends on what you do with your computer.

if your building a new pc then don't bother with 775 chips since the socket is dead.

Given the price you're probably looking at (based on Q9300 and Q8200), it may be worth looking at an AMD option, the AMD Phenom II X3 720 for instance is triple-core and 2.8GHz and doesn't use an obsolete socket.

But either way it does really depend on what you plan to do with it as well as when you're likely to next upgrade it.

Id like to put off an upgrade for as long as possible
