I have an AMD socket A/462 motherboard (HP Compaq FIC AU31), which has a 3-prong clip for attaching a heatsink, and no holes around the socket. I'm thinking of getting a new heatsink, which weighs 470g without the fan.

I thought I read somewhere that socket A motherboards have a weight limit of 300g for the heatsink, but I'm not sure. Is this weight limit true, and would I have a problem using a heatsink that is 470g + a fan. Also, has anyone used a heatsink over 300g with a socket A motherboard using only the 3-prong clip.

You're attaching the heat sink to some small plastic protrusions on the edge of the socket. It's not exactly going to hold alot of weight. Keep in mind that you need to be very careful when putting a heatsink on a socket A chip. If you put too much pressure on it you can easily damage the core.

That said I don't know why you would put such a heavy heatsink on that thing. Then again I put a big ol Silent Boost on my Athlon 3000+ ^_^. I can't imagine you having too many overclocking options in an HP BIOS though.
