So I thought my northbridge temp sensor was broken, cause it always stayed at 78C. Imagine my surprise today when it was at a blistering 79. I was shocked. Ran out of the house in my boxers and started screaming at the top of my lungs at 2 AM. Then a cat ran by and I tried to set my suit to invisible mode (I had been playing crysis) and I realized that the line between real and virtual life had been dissolving for quite some time now. LOL. So seriously, 79 is much too hot right? And it must be working right? Everything else is fine. CPU never goes above 58, idle is 33. GPU hasn't seen 65, norm load is 60ish. But then the fans come on, and never go above 50%, though I've run them manually at 100% before because I wasn't sure they went that high.
What should I do, I'm thinking something to the effect of a Northbridge HSF
Oh, it's a Gigabyte (surprise, surprise, every northbridge temp question on the interwebz invovles a gigabyte motherboard [great product, hot nb's]) MA-770-UD3
Something simple you want to do is, replace the TIM on the NB. Shouldn't take more than an hour. After that, recheck your NB Temps to see if there is any difference.
Thermal interface material, I think. A N/B HSF is probably an excellent idea, a lot of people says that it drops temps by 10-12 degrees. A worthwhile investment if temps are too hot for you.
Remove current heatsink and apply some fresh thermal paste, "TIM". Won't cost you anything, but your time, if you have some thermal paste already.
Your second choice is to replace the stock heatsink with a unit most likely with a fan. This one seems like it might be good, read the reviews and decide for yourself.
Well, you are right sir about everything you have recommended. I'm only concerned about the clearance issues when using this heat sink fan solution. Hope that he's not using a huge CPU cooler. Nice choice though sir. It's all copper and has heat pipes. Unfortunately in my configuration it wouldn't fit cause I use a Coolermaster z600 which cools my PDC. I ran my 24 pin power cords over the Z600, while I hava a 120mm fan placed underneath the cooler obstructing my N/B. I can always place the fan pointing to the rear but apparently my north bridge also gets way too hot for my touch that's why I placed it there. Anyway, I just wanted to raise this concern. This goes out to you too mister jadawgis732.
