bought the APC UPS 750G , installed the Powerchute 2.2 software from the site .. Vista 64. configured all the options, have the PC and monitor plugged into the BackUp slots.

how do i test if this thing works, because the software shows battery fully charged, 12 min estimated time using up 148Watts. In the runtime settings i have it set to shutdown if the battery reaches 5 min.

so i turned off the power to the unit and it shut off the pc and monitor... shouldn't it stay on, on battery for 7 min or so? or am i missing something about these UPS devices? this is my first one. i would like to test that the software will shut down my system safely.

If it shutdown after 5 mins, then it works fine. You shouldn't configure the software to let the system run for long enough to completely discharge the batteries. If there's a power outage for a couple hours and power comes back, the UPS has to be able to handle another power outage before having a chance to recharge its battery. Otherwise you'd be left without protection.

What do you mean you turned the power off to the unit? Did you push the power button on the ups or did you pull the plug from the wall?

it didnt stay on for 5 min, it shut down my system right away when i hit the power button on the UPS. it basically crashed my system. this is not supposed to happen.. shouldnyt the software allow 5 min at least of battery backup and then the software shutdown my pc "properly"? i mean thats what i thought a UPS does..

Well, there's your problem. The power button turns the UPS off. Pull the plug to test it. THINK!

ahhhh .. wouldnt think that makes a difference, plug or button.. power goes off. ok i will try pulling plug... now it says that the battery should charge 16 hrs when you buy it, but the software shows 100% charged, and its been plugged in for 2 hrs. safe to pull plug?

ok i plugged the plug, it did the 5 min wait on battery and then said it was going to hibernate. the system shut down.. when i plugged the UPS back into wall, turn on system, says "resuming windows" .. then reboots and comes up to screen \

"the last attempt to resume system from previous location failed attempt to resume again"

continue or
delete restoration data and proceed to system boot

i chose the latter.. and windows vista 64 loads up fine.

i dont have any power options enabled in windows including hibernate. do i have to turn hibernate on? is there a way where the software just shuts down windows without hibernation?

Is there a Power-Protection-Strategy in Powerchute 2.2 and that UPS? What about the shutdown strategy?

in the software i dont see any of those options, there's configuration on the side and it has 5 sub headings.. options, runtime, notification, sensitivity, and voltage.

options has enable sounds and systray icon.
runtime has preserve battery power and keep my computer on as long as possible (i have it set to battery power 2 min)
notification has disable/enable alarms
sensitivity has high, med, low for electrical noise (set to medium)
voltage has when battery backup will intervene (its on default here 139 volts above and 92 volts below)

nothing else, seems pretty simple.. no options for hibernation/shutdown. in windows i have all the power options set to off, i dont use sleep/hibernate etc.

There should be a way to configure the UPS service to shutdown the PC. If Vista is officially supported, you should contact APC support at http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_ [...] tryCode=us

just figured it out.. i disabled hibernation (even though all my power options are set to off for hibernation in control panel) through cmd, type powercfg -hibernation off

then when i unplugged the UPS, i got a shutdown window instead of hibernate! shutdown safely. booted up fine. thats what i wanted :)

thanks for your help tonight
