right to the chase:
i am going to buy "INTEL Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8 3MB FSB1066 Box
(BX80571E7400)" because its the cheapest core 2 duo in my store.
I DONT WANT TO OVERCLOCK! and i dont play games!!!
what ram do i need???
what i found out: PC2-8500 ram runs at 1066.
but almost all of them need 2,3 volt. but my mobo has 1,8volt.
there was one with 1,8volt but only with CL7 instead of CL5.
what happens if i use PC2-6400 ram which runs at 800???
ps: what do you think about this one instead:
"INTEL CPU, IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® Dual-Core Desktop Processor E5400, 2,7 GHz (BX80571E5400)" is it a big performance difference between core2duo??? (2.7 vs 2.8 or not?)
You won't need 1066 MHz RAM. 800 speed will be fine. As you'll be editing large music files, stick with e7400 for the larger L2 cache and faster bus speed. The $60 difference wil be worth it.
thanks a lot 4 the quick reply to both of u!
i think i will do as u say!!!
but just to ask 2 things more:
1. will the performance of the 7400 not suffer with a 800 ram?
2. you wouldnt consider the 1066 ram i mentioned with CL7? (800 ram=CL4)
1) The performance of the 7400 will not suffer with ddr2 800 ram. The only way you are going to see a difference between the two is if you are benchmarking. For normal usage it wont matter
2) point of fact: the lower the CL is the better. That being said again you really aren't going to notice a difference. Just get some cheap memory and dont sweat it.
no still get thw 2x2. even if you cant get all 4 gigs you'll get roughly 3.5 gigs of it, which is of course better then 2. and besides, memory is cheap
mamw93, every single post i have seen by you has been so off of the mark it isn't even funny. No it will not "bottleneck the cpu", yes 4 gigs is preferable to 2, yes memory is hella cheap so its worthwhile to get more, and yes you fail. Until you get a basic idea of what you are talking about stop posting.

You need to buy 800mhz memory, 2x2 gig, that runs at 1.8 volts.
You don't need anything fancy, or expensive, just good name brand memory, that runs with good tight timings at 1.8 volts.
No need for anything else, or worry about anything else.
FYI, your processor ACTUALLY runs on a 266mhz FSB. It is "quad pumped" to make an effective data rate of 1066, but the actual buss speed is 266, not 1066.
That is why we are telling you that buying faster memory makes no difference.
You can run memory that needs higher voltage, but it can be a problem.
You would first install 1 stick only, boot into the BIOS, (finger crossed 1 stick will boot at 1.8) disable the auto-voltage and raise the voltage manually to 2.3.
Shut down, install the second stick, and you should be good to go.
But, as I stated, there are many, many good name brand 2x2 gig sets of ram available at decent prices that will run at 1.8 volts.
I highly suggest buying one of those sets.
