I just upgraded to AMD Phenom II 940, Gagbyte MA790x-UD4, and G Skill Pi (2GB x 2). I reinstalled windows after the upgrade and everything works great except...I cannot install games. My entire computer freezes and I must force restart. I know my install disks are not back because the games installed find prior to the upgrade. Searching around I hear I may need a bigger PSU because I currently have 500w. A calculator at Antec's site says I need 650w. Is this true? Could this be causing the install problem? Thanks

Here is a link to a psu power supply calculator:

The total you come up with will be for the entire system. Please remember the wattage will be overestimated because there are people who buy cheap psu's of poor quality.

Here is a link to a chart at Tom's hardware showing video card power usage:

I doubt you need more than 500w with that system. Unless it is a old dying PSU. It might be a heat issue. Have you ever ran a program to see your temps? I use speed fan for mine (not sure if that is the best one seems fine for me though). http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php If it is a heat problem you may have to reseat the heatsink. Also you could run Memtest to check your ram for errors (not sure if this would cause those problems though) http://www.memtest.org/
Just some of my suggestions hope they help

One thing I forgot is your bios up to date for the PII. You need F2 for PII 940. The temps you list will probably be your idle temps. Which look good to me. Now you need to stress it and see how the temps are. A great way to do this is by running Prime 95 found here http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103. Run it and see what the temps are while running it for like i don't know maybe 10min and see what your temps are then. It might not even be temps. Im still pretty new at this stuff. You may look at this link (I know yours post and all but it may help alittle, you never know) http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-build-post-checklist
sorry about my noobness

I got really excited when I realized I hadn't upgraded my bios to F2...but then it still froze. Could it be an issue with disk mounting? I have tried daemon and alcohol, but they both freeze.

I may have come across a problem, not sure though. Looking into my memory, which I bought as a combo from newegg with the PII processor, it appears that it mostly supports intel chipsets. And my board is not listed as a qualified board. (http://newgskill.web-bi.net/bbs/view.php?id=g_ddr2&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&category=57&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&desc=asc&no=126) Any suggestions?

It appears the problem lies with mounting the image and installing. I can extract the iso's and install fine. Not sure why mounting locks up. Thanks for all the help so far.
