How to fix a portable hard drive

Hello,
when i plug my hard drive in at first it does not show up in "my computer" file then i go to control panel and find it there under devises. then it shows up in my computer. but when i try to open it the little load bar at the top goes all the way and stops loading. i sat it there for over an hour and nothing.
