Hello,

Can anyone give me opinions on the best performing AGP cards? I am looking for one final upgrade to my old machine and have considered an ATI X1950 card. I would like Shader 3.0 support and that card has it. I have found a few on Ebay that are quite affordable (under $50). Are there any better choices for gaming on this machine with an AGP slot? Is $50 a decent price for this card? I saw the best video card for the money thread in this forum. Wheer does this card fit into the list?

Thanks in advance.

Radeon HD 3850 AGP is the only AGP card left that is worth looking at.
I'd highly recomend upgrading to PCI-E x16 as soon as possible though. Even that AGP card won't be able to handle the graphics on some newer games. I managed to play Oblivion on it for a bit, but had to use very tamed down graphiics.

It really depends on which X1950 AGP card you're talking about, XT ? PRO?,GT?, XTX? The HD3850AGP card is the best AGP card that's out, but it also has pretty high power requirements that you should be aware of, as do some of the X1950 cards. Here's links to the hierarchy chart.

If you can find an affordable X1950 that your PSU supports it would be a good solution to extending the life of your system.

The 3850 is the only card worth looking at if you've got a CPU to handle it. Other than that, you should choose a 2600 or an x1650, but the 1600 series are getting hard to find.

What's your CPU?

Thanks for the info. That was all very helpful. I probably do not have the PSU necessary to run even a X1950. I have a 350w PSU and am running two optical drives, two hard drives and several USB items (most are powered through AC cords--another hard drive, a video box and sometimes a gamepad or joystick). I already run a Radeon x800XL in there and I was uneasy about upgrading to that card with the 350w PSU. Maybe I'll just save the money to upgrade the machine once I can talk my wife into it. :(

I recently bought an open box Radeon 3850 on Newegg for 84.99.

Just be sure that you have the proper power connectors. on your PSU. The Sapphire card requires at least a 6 pin PCI express power cable (though the card has an 8 pin connector). see http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuc [...] ectors.htm for pictures of the connectors. This (PCI express connectors on an AGP video card) confused me a bit when i set it up.

I have a 400 watt PSU that handled this card without a problem.

Good luck.
