Forum CPU & Components : CPUs Advice:The Best Phenom II Mobo?? for a new build

Hi all, I need advice, please.

After pretty extensive reading here I've pretty much decided to buy a Phenom II 940.

I'm currently sitting on a brand new Antec 900 and and an OCX 650 Watt PSU. I'm building this system from scratch and need everything (mobo, CPU, ram, video, sata hdd's). I generally lean towards gaming, audio ripping/playing and occasionally DVD ripping so I don't see the need for an I7. I do like to OC and am psyched to see what I can do with the unlocked multiplier.

You are thinking how much do I want to spend? Around 700.00 - $850.00 from this point. At about $ 230.00 for the cpu that leaves between 500.00/620.00. I figure about 50-75 for 4GB ram and around 99.00 for at least a 1TB Sata drive. 25.00 for a dvd burner

Of course, I dream of a 295GTX or a 4870 X2 but that doesn't seem likely... Maybe a single 4870 1GB for now? or 9800GTX? I guess I need advice on that too... lol

230/cpu
75/ram
100/sata
25/DVD
= 505.00 with about 350.00 remaining

So what are your thoughts?

I like the AMD 940 too

check out the ASUS Crosshair.

Excellent overclocker focused BIOS with lots of adjustments and features like (tri) SLI, hybrid power, and works with AM2 and AM3. Still usees affordable DDR2.

NewEgg had boxless motherboard only special for $175

For video card, the 9800GX2 is a great card, and is only going for $249, if your powersupply can take it.

On ebay 9800GTX+ is less than $100, two in SLI are faster than the 9800GTX. Im really happy with my PNY 9800GTX, its not as fast as the 200 series, but half the price. 90% as fast, Only 5fps slower than a 200 series in-game on most machines. About 10% slower than a 4870, but $100 vs $150 for the 512mb buffer.

I was going to say that the M4A79 Deluxe looked like the one but, have you folks checked out the Crosshair that Kassenz suggested? It looks pretty amazing! The only thing is, it doesn't support Crossfire! check it out:

Hmmm choices,

So do you think it is better to run two cards in crossfire, or 1 gtx 260? Or, run two 9800 in sli on the Crosshair?

There should be a bunch of good AM3 motherboards coming out this month

I am a nVidia fan, but I love AMD CPU's.

I would recommend AMD motherboard/crossfire with ATI/AMD graphics. The AMD over works, and everything works together. These guys are right about the 4870 - it is better than the 9800GTX. I've read the 2x9800GTX in SLI is actually pretty awesome, and faster than one 280. I havent read much on 4780 in CF, I imagine its even faster then either.

On my ASUS with the nvidia nForce 780a, it works, but a few problems compaired to the DFI LanParty NF4 I just retired:

1) the onboard graphics suck in 3d games. It is equal to a 7600gt or something.

2) It wont let me overclock the video card anymore. Infact the NVidia control panel lost half the adjustments AND the monitor that I liked and used.

3) it won't let me SLI a 8800GTS & 9800GTX together anymore (but who cares really) It will let me use the 8800GTS 320mb for a physx, but what games run physx anyway?!

4) AMD overdrive don't work on a nvidia board, and the ASUS software is really simple, and doesn't overclock much.
5) oh, hybrid power and hybrid SLI only works if your running a 8500gt. wtf?!

NewEgg has a few AM3 MB's check em out if you want to buy DDR3. The DFI Lanparty 790 MR has a complex BIOS, check it out if you want to use DDR2
