Hmmm, the biggest dissappointment is that they didnt use a mainstream card. Maybe that is why it took them forever to release it. I bet they had issues and finally salvaged it with whatever that wierd card is.

Well, I waited but time to order either the HDX16T or DV5T from HP :)

Right but so basically from reading other sites, the 9600M is a bit faster and uses less power.

So why would Dell wait this long to refresh, and go BACKWARDS!?

9600M is pretty much the baseline every other vendor is using for this class of notebook so I don't get what Dell was thinking, unless they are under pressure to save Alienware and force people to try and go there?

Riiight.

how fast is dell wanting to repeat the nvidia thermal problem. Yes thats old news but you tell corporate America during A recession that the problem has been "fixed" and that the 1000's of notebooks hey are about to purchase wont have a proble. Watch how fast their cheque book comes out....

Yet this move is expanding their range and has sold me on one sexy laptop. hope dell lives up to my thinkpad's.

Wierd, DV5T and HDX16T from HP (DV5T won laptop of the year in both CPU and Laptop magazine for it's class) use the 9600M and get nothing but awards and praise.

I think just like Hiroshima and other catastrophes, the world has moved on from the 8X00 NVidia issues.

It should be good to watch the fallout from this one ;P

sorry but let me inform you of something

100 laptops @ 1200 $ after tax = 120000k

if your a IT manager what do you place your recommendation on. Nvidia which your manager has seen has had problems with their laptops GPU's or ATI which has stayed off CNN and other news stations for their problems.

hate to say it but ATI has scored a win.

His point appears to be sound to me.

They, meaning everyone, really got hammered on those cards and that can tend to stick around for awhile.

Also, we don't know what Dell payed ATI for that card.

Who knows maybe it will backfire?

I much prefer the drivers and interface of ATI,

All my laptops have been ati, except my current Nvidia one (8400M)

I will never buy another Nvidia card again, they don't even support Theater mode and their TV out mode is nothing comparted to the versatility of the ATI drivers.

i still don't lmpw wjat a m86xt is but the studio xps 1640 is a beast for the price, it stands close to a desktop, short of gamers but still can game on the lower games, i just want to know if its a gddr3 or a gddr5, i know its an independent card, i think. I have a 1501 that had an ati card that worked really well for two years now. the overall 8400 base cpu is one of the main things that sold me, and no i do not work for dell, i am a student at the u of o, GO DUCKS, and it also has a 3x3 wireless card plus comes standard with a 7200 rpm hard drive, but again still don't know what the ATI vid card is now?

Wait until your 8400M dies after 12-19 months. I think everyone just bought their last NVidia.

Got my 1640 (xps studio 16) 2 months ago and mine had the ATI radeon HD 3670. I think a previous poster advised it was this same card.

Not sure why, but on the website they list it as ATI 3670, but in this mail advert I got at work it lists it as the M86XT...

It's the only chip they list on the website, why these guys can't just name a chip/card and stick with that is beyond me...

Oh well...my limited research showed it on par with the Nividia 9600M with differing opinions on who came out on top (just slightly).
