Will GTX295 cause a price drop across the board?

Hello Toms. I'm going to be ordering parts for a new machine around the middle of this month or sooner, planning on grabbing a 4870. The Sapphire I want is currently hovering around 199, occasionally it jumps to 220. I think 199 is a decent price for this card, but should I hold out until after CES, or the end of the month before ordering? I'd hate to put down 200 bucks on a GPU just to have it drop to 160 in two weeks. I expect the 4870x2 and GTX 280 to drop some, anyone think the cuts will extend to the GTX 260/4870 level?

I think it's more likely that the GTX295 will be priced so high there won't be any need for price cuts. OR the price cuts would only affect the 4870X2...

I think you should wait... 2 reasons.
1-Phenom 2 coming and might have influence on the current price of the CPU.
2-GTX 295 and GTX 285 (not sure for the 285 launch date) and it should impact the price of the other cards since it's suppose to be $500 at launch for the 295. Unless overprice because of low avaibility and high demand.

The GTX 295 will drop the 4870X2 most likely because it will out perform it, so dropping the price will make it more appealing, the GTX285 will drop the GTX 280 price most likely. My guess would be that the 4870 will stay steady, but waiting cant kill you.

As nocteratus said, the GTX295 MSRP is supposed to be 500$, in the same price range as current 4870X2 and GTX280, but it should outperform both so I guess prices will go down.

I'm running a single core athlon, 1GB RAM, and x1600. Waiting much longer might kill me :)

Given the 4870 is already at 200-220$, prices cannot drop a lot. The impacted cards will most likely be the ones still priced at 500$ like some GTX280 and 4870X2. How the landslide will go from there is a matter of speculation as prices already vary a lot from brand to brand.

The SAPPHIRE 100259L Radeon HD 4870 512MB was $164.99 after $20 MIR two weeks ago. Newegg and every other site has jacked up their prices, since the new year. :pfff:

just fyi, when the cards do come out, don't expect an immediate price drop... i dont think the phenom II will drop any intel prices for MONTHS, unless its a severe blow, but c'mon, its AMD, they're so behind, it's kinda pathetic

but yeah, the 295 should cause price drops oh, somewhere after 1-2 weeks after its release? its usually how it works

I don't know but I read Jan 8th for the gtx 295 and Jan 15th for the gtx 285 as the launch date.

If so the best time to expect price drop will be early/mid Feb.
