I have a compaq presario Model number SR1033WM. when I plug in a mp3 usb device it comes up with an "unrecognized" message. I navigated to the %windir%\inf directory looking for drivers but it can't find what it needs. What is it missing?

I have tried 3 different mp3 players and the result is the same for all. Yes it does have the yellow !

When a usb device is plugged in, what driver repository is xp looking at?

Is it only MP3 players that have this issue?

I believe XP will look in a number of places for drivers. Standard locations are the /inf directory you already mentioned but windows also has \windows\system32\drivers which on my machine contains just over 300 files, 13 of which start with the letters USB (ie. USBCAMD.sys, usbport.sys, usbhub.sys)

no, probably a hot fix or two, that would be it. my main question was where does xp look for this driver and you touched on that. a mem stick will look at usbstor.sys and I was looking for the *.sys or *.dll that contains the drivers for mp3 devices. I was hoping to find a usbfix.exe and I'd be good to go...but then I knew that was too easy.
