I'm building a new i7 core machine and have been looking at video cards. I found this one on newegg.com and was wondering if this is a good deal or if I should wait until the 295 is released and the prices of the cards start dropping?

It's a Gigabyte 4870 512MB. The price seems really attractive at $170...

Thoughts? I'll probably build this towards the end of January, but if there's a good deal out there, I'd buy something earlier, rather than wait.

$170 isn't a bad price. I own one and don't care for it though.

Imo, $170 is a pretty good deal providing you actually get the MIR.

Good price, but if you`re building for i7 I`d hang on for a while longer.

With an i7 system, you will be able to max any game (Crysis exempt...) at 1920x1200 4xAA 8xAF, and still at least get 40+ FPS. With Crysis, if you still want 40FPS in the later levels, then you'll probably need to end up playing it at 1680x1050... and even then you'll have to keep the settings at high, and keep the AA/AF to a minimum.

That's a fantastic deal considering I bought my HD4870 for $310 6 months ago...
I would get it, and then crossfire it later. It's cost effective, significantly cheaper then the HD4870x2. If you want to get an NVIDIA card, then you'll have to wait a while anyway, as the only i7 boards out at the moment are X58.

What are you talking about?????

The X58 chipset works just fine with nVidia cards... it even supports 3 way sli...

Apparently it was such a good deal that newegg is sold out of them...haha. I'm sure something like this will jump up again sometime soon though. Now to try to pick the rest of the components!
