Matching memory?

I was wondering cuz my dad said that I might have to have 2 of of the same type of memory/size because my mother board has 2 slots right next to eachother and another 2 an inch away, is this tru or can I have (what im plaing) 2x 256, a 512 and a 1g?

It might work, but it's impossible to tell without knowing the type of memory and motherboard. Installing 2 x 1 GB modules would be best.

Some motherboards are more sensitive to mismatches.

If you already have the ram, try it.

If you are buying ram, look for a 2gb or 4gb kit. It should cost about $20 for a 2x1gb kit.

Check that the ram is ok for your mobo by going to the ram vendor's web site and using their ram selection configurator.

But do you know what motherboard you have and if a 1 GB module will work?

Download and run cpu-z. It will identify your motherboard and ram.

I did it and its an intel D865GLC then it said AAC32156-405

It would be best if the new modules matched the specifications of the old ones (the CPU-Z memory and SPD tabs should provide that info). They have to be rated at 2.6V and ideally they should be the same type (DDR266, DDR333 or DDR400).
