I'm working on building my first PC to take away to college, and am looking for a monitor to go with it. However, after reading up on various types of panels, resolutions, aspect ratios, and other such info, I can officially say I no longer have any idea what I want, so I've decided to just put it to people with far more experience than me - the forum community.
Some basic info, partly copied from my build thread:
1) It will be used for pretty heavy gaming, a fair bit of messing around in Photoshop, and, as I will be doing a game design major, possibly everything from video encoding to 3D rendering.
2) I have a budget of about $200 - $300 (I'm willing to stretch it to $350 for something really great, though).
3) Preferably, I'd like to buy from a brick-and-mortar store or NCIXUS, who seem to have cheap insurance against dead pixels.
4) The PC will likely be running on a GTX260 or a Radeon HD 4870.
5) The PS3 will also be connected, meaning the monitor would need two DVI ports or a DVI and an HDMI. It will be running at 1080p (or 720p if necessary) and any stretching or cropping is a big no-no. I'm unsure how to tell whether 16:10 monitors support 1:1 1080p, however (or simply an option to not scale the picture? I don't know how this works).
6) 21.5" is about as small as I'd like to go, and 24" would be nice but certainly pricey.
7) Speakers will be bought separately.
8) I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
So, any suggestions? I leave the matter entirely in the hands of the community.
Interesting suggestion, though a bit pricey. Anyone have opinions on the Asus VW246H? I can't find any professional reviews, but it is looking good on Newegg.
well, a 16:10 monitor should display 16:9 content (as in videos etc) by putting cinema-like bars at the top and bottom... windows should give you an option of running in 1920X1080 if you get a 16:9 monitor though. and yes, there are some 16:9 monitors. i see you've found the ASUS 24" 1080p... how about the Acer?
I've spent about six hours today looking at monitors, and probably four before that on other days. Frankly, I'm sick of it.
I found a bunch of nice monitors (like a great deal on the Samsung T240 on NCIXUS), but they all seem to have something wrong. For instance, in the Samsung's case it does not have 1:1 display of 1080p, 16:9 content (though the more expensive T240HD does). Instead, it upscales it - lord knows why, seeing how letterboxing would be better and undoubtedly simpler.
