New Ram causing beeping???

Right, so I got an older business HP dx2200 MT and the manual says it supports up to 4 gigs of RAM and is compatible up to 800mhz pc6400. I assume that it will just run at pc5300 however, no problem.

So I go and get an adata 2 gig ddr2 pc400 stick and I take out the old RAM (pc5300 but some strange amount of ram, like 812 or something?) and chuck in the new 2 gig stick. All I get is fast repetitive beeping from the motherboard and no starting up.

If I put in both sticks it "post"s (i think), the HP blue screen appears, then it starts to load up but stops almost immediately and says something along the lines of "incompatible RAM configuration - please remove incompatible DIMM something a rather" and just sits there.

Now I read around earlier before I went to get this RAM (and subsequently, a second stick of a different brand also just to see) and I was under the impression that the motherboard would take the new RAM. But it seems this is not the case.

Can I flash the bios or change something in the bios to allow the motherboard to accept this new RAM because 2gigs of 667 ddr2 is hard to come by here.

Please help :bounce:

Did you buy one 2 GB module or 2 x 1 GB modules? According to the system specifications, the maximum module size is 1 GB. While PC2-6400 might work, memory resellers usually sell PC2-5300 for that system.

I don't know where you are, but memory for that system isn't hard to find and it's inexpensive: http://www.pcmemorystore.com/HP_Compaq-HP_Compaq_Business_Desktop-dx2200_Microtower-ram.htm

EDIT: You should probably read this before ordering memory: http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1240451331300+28353475&threadId=1204778

Hmmm thanks GhislainG. I thought I had read in the manual that you could put 4 gigs in the motherboard but it would only recognized 3.5 gigs... meaning to me that 2x2gig sticks was possible. Oh well might aswell take the ram back for 2x1 gig and hope that's enough for Warhammer lol I think not.

Thanks again

You may want to double check that memory. you posted it as ddr2 400; which is 3200 speed not 6400. You want to get either DDR2-5300 (2x2=4gigs) or DDR2 -6400 (2x2=4gigs). Either way you're better off using only two sticks instead of 4.
If you go with the 4 stick and you have problem booting, remove two stick and go into your bios and set the Ram voltage to the manufacture spec's - save - turn off - then add the other two sticks. You may have to slightly increase the ram voltage if you find out you're having stability problems. :)

I'm sure he meant pc6400, not pc400. DDR2-6400 will not work in that system. Modules larger than 1 GB also won't work. That system only has 2 DIMM slots and changing the RAM voltage isn't an option. Crucial CT12864AA667.16FF apparently works: http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT12864AA667. Having 16 chips for a 1 GB module also is important.

This is from the user manual the maximum you can install is 2GB. It does not support 2GB dimms.
DIMMs
The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with up to
two industry-standard DIMMs. These memory sockets are populated
with at least one preinstalled DIMM. The sockets are labeled DIMM1
and DIMM2. To achieve the maximum memory support, you can
populate the system board with up to 2GB (2 x 1GB) of memory.
DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs
For proper system operation, the DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs must be:
■ industry-standard 240-pin
■ unbuffered PC2-5300 667 MHz-compliant
■ 1.9 volt DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs
The DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs must also:
■ support CAS latency 4 (CL = 4) for PC2-5300 667 MHz
■ contain the mandatory JEDEC SPD information
In addition, the computer supports:
■ 256Mbit, 512Mbit, and 1Gbit non-ECC memory technologies
■ single-sided and double-sided DIMMS
■ DIMMs constructed with x8 and x16 DDR devices; DIMMs
constructed with x4 SDRAM are not supported
✎ The system will not start if you install unsupported DIMMs.

oh man, I must have just read it wrong in hope of it being able to get 4 gigs.. where did I read that? Crazy, oh well problem solved, hastiness was to blame. Thanks for the lesson dudes. Back to the shop
