how to format a disc for xp

how do i format a dvd-r disc to copy cd films usjng xp

Is it a DVD-RW disc ? Only rewritables need formating. The burning software will do that.
With that said you can write "Sessions" on a standard disc but you need to uncheck "Finalize Disc". So when you choose which type of disc to write use "Multi-Session" for a standard DVD-R, no formatting required.

If you're going to do this a lot, get Nero or some full burning software.
