I'm looking at buying a 9800GTX from nvidia.

But when looking at chipsets I'm left a little baffled by some of the info on the net. "DirectX 10 compatible chipset" implies that I'll need to upgrade my motherboard just to be able to use DX10?

Would this also mean I couldn't use VISTA? -As well as not being able to play games in DX10?

I was looking at the 720a and the 630a.

(AMD CPU)

Yes and No.

To run a game in DX10 you need:

1) Vista or Windows 7
2) Graphic card supporting DX10

It is possible, however, that the motherboard you looked at had an integrated graphics chip that is DX10 compatible.

Your 9800GTX running on Vista is going to have DX10 support. No worries.

Awesome.

So long as U don't need a certain type of motherboard to get vista and DX10 that's alllllll cool!!!

It's nvidia 8 series and up that are DX 10.

Anyone have any clue about what would be better in terms of a chipset for lots of gaming etc...;

650a/630a (mainstream but older) chipset or 720a (value but newer) chipset?
