Hi.

Recently built a machine:

Code:
BIOSTAR TpowerX58 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache
OCZ Platinum 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
SeaSonic S12 Energy Plus SS-550HT 550W ATX12V V2.3
Powercolor Radeon x1950 256mb.

And a few western digital HDs.

The machine's generally unstable. It'll freeze after hours of
average load (long compilations, etc). I'm not overclocking
and am using BIOS defaults. I've updated the BIOS to the most
recent version available on the Biostar site.

I was using the stock heatsink and pre-applied thermal compound to
start with but then used Zalman Grease after removing the heatsink
thinking it was badly seated (it wasn't).

Idle core temperature is around 30-35C and ambient case temperature
is 50C. Northbridge temperature is 50C idle - this seems high to me.

I've kept a note of testing procedures:

Code:
Power supply assumed to be good. Voltages in BIOS appear
to be correct and stable.

Removed CPU/heatsink. Cleaned stock thermal compound with
Arcticlean solution. Applied 'Zalman Grease' thermal compound.

Idle temperature:

  CPU 30 - 35C
  Northbridge 50C
  Ambient 25C

Tested ram sticks 1 .. 2 in slots 1 .. 2, 7.5 hours, no problem.
Tested ram sticks 1 .. 3 in slots 1 .. 2, 7.5 hours, no problem.
Tested ram sticks 1 .. 4 in slots 1 .. 2, 7.5 hours, no problem.
Tested ram sticks 1 .. 5 in slots 1 .. 2, 7.5 hours, no problem.
Tested ram sticks 1 .. 6 in slots 1 .. 2, 7.5 hours, no problem.
Tested ram sticks 1 .. 6 in slots 1 .. 6, page fault after 4 hours.
Tested ram sticks 1 .. 2 in slots 5 .. 6, 5 hours, no problem.

Suspicious of slot 4. Page fault occurred when accessing
8gb - 10gb. If memory is arranged sequentially from slot
1 .. 6, slot 4 contains the 8gb - 10gb range when using
all six sticks.

Am currently testing the middle pair of slots. The BIOS
has a copy of memtest86, modified to support the Core i7
so no OS is involved. No disks are attached.

If anyone has any idea what the problem is, I'd love to hear
it...

I should make it clear the the freezes/crashes occurred in both
the operating system (FreeBSD/Solaris) and in the BIOS memtest.
