For pure gaming, the E8400 in most cases (though there are more exceptions every day). The quad will be just as fast or faster in most games, but not enough to take the price/performance crown from the duo. For almost all other tasks, I'd take the quad, despite the higher cost.

 

Realistically, I'd say go quad if your budget allows. It's definitely worth it.
