Sorry for the lack of active newegg links - NOOB here for html and builds.
Here's my ? - I have an old IBM P4 2 ghz in a closet that is my download / home automation / whole house audio server. Tired of the "Running out of Virtual Memory" warning and lockups on spyware and virus scans.
I'm thinking that I can use the same case (horizontal in a rack - Lenovo I now recall). Maybe same PSU (not sure what power but maybe OK with the 65W processor below). I'm willing to spend a bit on Mobo / Pro to possibly upgrade case / PSU / video later.
I have an old Dell box from 95 downstairs that I think I can NAS later. So, here's my plan - please advise:
Buy a 1 tb drive + enclosure -> backup "server"; teardown and install components below; install Vista home (I have copy that didn't work on my old HP laptop); move P4 3 ghz mobo / pro from "server" to box downstairs; buy 2 more 1 tb drives for RAID 5 NAS.
Next Spring, build full I7 / Vista 64? desktop to replace old HP office laptop so I can play Fallout 3 - instead of buying a PS3 or Wii.
I have a DVD and DVD burner drive that are OK in the server - I think I can fit everything (especially with that small video card) in the existing case. See any concerns? (Should I just get a CM690 now -> but then do I aso have to get PSU and opticals?).
I appreciate any help and comments - especially compatability concerns for the major parts below.
