Ok here is the problem I want to build a new computer to replace my old dell, and I want to be able to play the newer games. I wanted to game on my current monitor (17" 1280x1024 max res.) and I want to play Fallout3, Crysis, FC2, COD4, etc.

Should I get an amd quad/dual intel quad core/dual core and a 4870, 9800gtx+, 4850, gtx 260, etc. What should I get? I will definitely want a p45 or similar mobo, 650-700w psu, etc.

go for the usual combo:

4870hd 1gig
E8500 (or q9550)
p5q pro
a 750watt psu from a known brand
2x2gig pc6400 ddr2
wd 640gig
choice of case go with something in a combo deal or whatever tickles your fancy. I don't even bother with case suggestions now.

Going quad may give you the advantage in certain applications that are to be developed with multithreading in mind. Going Duo will save you money now.

For the type of machine, you really should upgrade to a 22-24inch monitor, it is a world of difference and would really make the hardware shine more. A decent one will run you about 330$CAD in the 24s or 280$CAD in the 22s.

+1 for antiacid. Get these parts:
RAM, $50

PC P&C 750W, $70

If you definitely want P45 then you definitely want a Crossfire card for future-proofing. There's a Sapphire HD 4870 1GB for only $210 at newegg.
You also definitely want an Intel CPU, because an AMD won't work in it.
The E8500 is good enough for what you're describing. The Q9550 is more future-proof but costs more.

Case: RC-690 or Antec 300, for example.
