There should be a little switch on the drive that you can flick to remove the write protection/lock.

I assume you're talking about a flash drive, and not an external USB hard drive....

Some flash drives have that switch, some don't.

If your doesn't, go to the manufacturer's website, download, and run their flash drive utility.
