Hello,
I am trying to do a clean install with on a netbook with win xp media new os. Part way through the process (this is my first attempt to install an os) I get the message please insert the cd laneleds windows xp professional service pack 2 cd. I have 2 other cds that came with the new os neither are labeled that. And neither of them will work. Any ideas? Thank you so very much! Linda

Here is some information that I gathered:

None of the above address the situation that you are describing.

Do you have a complete (full) licence of Win XP Media Center? Because of the technical challenges involved, Microsoft did not encourage DIY installs of this, and initially had manufacturers like HP, Dell, Compaq, etc. preload this in their products.

Even so, I don't see a problem if you have a full install DVD of the OS. Familiarize yourself with the instructions that came with the DVD.

And of course, make sure the hardware is capable.

Thank you for your response. My daughter purchased the windows xp media for me from her college brand new still sealed in plastic. However there are absolutely no instructions for installation of the software with the discs, only instructions for hooking up the hardware.
Is it just the media version of xp that gives so much trouble for do it yourself install? Is xp home or pro any better?
Thanks again

XP Media Center OS is similar to XP Pro with some extras for home entertainment.

If you have the complete installation disks, then you can try a new install on a new HDD. Remove the existing HDD with the XP OS on it. Keep it in a safe place.

Install a new HDD in the computer. Now install XP Media OS on this new HDD. If it still doesn't work, go back to the old HDD with XP on it.

What product key came with the laptop? Most likely Home or Pro, as Media Edition isn't really suitable for netbooks. I'd suggest sticking with one of those... depending on the product key that you have. You can still get the clean media for those without installing any of the add-on software that OEMs usually have installed.

the netbook came with ubuntu on it. I am installing a larger 32gb ssd drive on the netbook. can you tell me why you thing win xp would not be suitable for the netbook? i gathered from the original response above that possibly xp media had some intallation issues, with others besides me. i wanted a smaller os then win 7, but something compatible with my other software programs, and thought i might do better with xp home or pro rather than the media. thanks for your input
