Just joined, and could use some help from someone more knowledgable than I as to what the problem may be.
I just purchased a memory upgrade for my Gateway FX530XG machine. The new chips I purchased were "2Gb DDR2 PC2-5300 @667mhz" I bought 2 of them to replace 2 of the 512Mb chips I had installed from the factory. (Machine originally had 3Gb total ram..2 of it being 1Gb chips and 2 of the 512MB chips.)
Its an Intel motherboard (Intel (Big Arm) 975X Viiv Motherboard [Part #4006151R]). Gateway specs say i can go as high as 8Gb memory, and it has 4 slots...so I didnt forsee any issue replacing the 512MB chips with the 2Gb ones.
However installing them stops my PC from posting. I get 3 long beeps and thats it.
Ive taken each 2Gb chip and moved it to all 4 slots, and tried booting...same thing. Ive cleared the CMOS by pulling the battery and waiting, then replacing it..no avail.
Putting my old chips back in allows the PC to once again boot with no issue.
Im really at a loss...seems these chips just dont work in my system. I ordered them right from Gateways "shop by system" affiliate which listed these for my PC model. I notice my original sticks all state PC2-5300U, does the "u" at the end make a difference that would stop me? The new chips dont state this at the end of the number.
Anything besides the RAM being faulty that i might be missing? Im all out of ideas, and would appreciate any help anyone can provide.
Thank you
While the motherboard might run the RAM, perhaps it needs some help with the settings.
You should find out what voltage and timings are needed by the RAM, then go into BIOS (using the old RAM) and make those changes manually. Once you save and exit, shutdown, unplug, and install ONE stick of your new RAM. Once you are up and running and the settings are all OK, go for both sticks.
Go to Crucial.com, they have a system where you just choose your computer model and it lists the memory you need. Its guaranteed, they use only Micron chips, and its probably half the price you paid from Gateway. Free shipping, free tech support.
