I have lost my volume control icon

I have lost my volume control icon and cannot figure out
how to get it back. Initially, I lost volume altogether.

I reloaded XP Professional, ran all the updates, and I
have volume control through programs, but I still don't
have the little speaker in the task bar.

I have looked and looked in the available help, but either
I don't know what keywords to use when I search help or it
is not there.

Harry, go to Classic Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices Icon>Volume>Check
the box Place Volume
Icon in Taskbar.

You are not alone. My colume control icon dissapears often. He has given
you good advice. You cannot just uncheck and re-check the selection
box. You must uncheck and then click on apply and then close the Sound
controls. Then you must go back in and re-check the selection box.
Rich, is there a way to prevent this from repeatedly occurring. I
consider myself somewhat computer literate but I have not found a way
to prevent this. Is there a registry edit for this problem.
