I was recently given a HP Pavilion Media Center a1646x. The CPU that came with it is an Intel Core Duo E6300, 1.86ghz, 2Mb Cache, 1066Mhz FSB. The specs for this board state that it can only take a 6x00 series CPU running with a 1066Mhz FSB. Found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc [...] 47&lang=en
My question is, does anyone know for certain if it is possible to use a newer chip like the e7400 2.80GHz, 3MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB?
Both have the same bus speed so is it compatible? Id like to max out what this board can take but the upper 6x00 series are way more expensive then the 7x00 series with the same FSB. Thanks ahead of time!

I personally do not think so. According to the specification sheet, the board only supports up to Conroe based Core 2 Duos, while E7400 is a Wolfdale based Core 2 Duo. Although technically the chipset should support it, I don't think HP wrote a BIOS for the board to enable support for the Wolfdale processors.

You'll have to flash the BIOS to get it to work. But as long as the mobo is Socket 775 it'll run fine you just have to flash the BIOS to something that'll support the Wolfdale CPU's

Need suggestion in picking a Processor

The i7 920 runs about $290 in US, so I'm guessing that you either are not in the US or need that $400 for more then just the cpu. So a PII 955 c3 is $160 on newegg.com, can get a good asus board for $110ish, and 4gb of ddr3 for $105ish. Total would be around $375. There are also boards in the $60 range that are good but dont have as many features. You can try an i5 setup, but it will push you past your $400 limit.
