Hi,
I have a Dell dimension 9200 desktop. Dell "support" won't tell me who the manufacturer of the motherboard is. I know the chip set is Intel P965, socket 775. It has a duo core 2 porcessor @1.66 GHz. I want to upgrade so that it runs at atleast 3 GHz.

Is this possible with this mb? If so, what is the suggested cpu?

I would even consider building a new comp. but would rather save some money. Thanks for your time.

Can't CPU-Z provide that info?

Well, you can use CPU-Z to see who manufactured or designed the motherboard, but you still need to bet the BIOS updates from Dell. Check the BIOS updates section for your computer and see if there are any notes regarding CPU support. Dell of course would rather you buy a new computer than upgrade your CPU ^_^.

That explains why alienware wont send me a m9750 mother board to my m9700!

To be honest They proably dont know. I have worked in that field for a rather long time. The hardware that is sold is made as cheaply as possable and will usualy only work properly with the rest of the hardware it is sold with. Usualy there is a part number in there system and thats all it is a part number. You could crack the case find the model number and google it. As for wanting to jump from a 1.6 to a 3.0 that is no small feat and with any system it would usualy require a mobo replacment and that PSU you got while your at it might wanna get a new one of those too. In fact is you do the math you may be better off building from scratch for upgradeabilty or if your like me and on a budget go prebuilt.

If your dell case is a standard atx size, then you can replace the motherboard with a different one. however, I do not think you would be able use the same copy of windows. I have an old dell and I think that my copy of windows xp will ONLY work on the motherboard that comes with my computer. There are ways to work around it, but I have not looked into it.

Generally, Dell motherboards are probably manufactured by Intel. That's what my old dell had, but it was dell proprietary.

Thanks a whole bunch.
I installed CPU-Z and it told me that the manufacturer is Dell, the model is 0CT017, Southbridge ( whatever that is ) Intel 82801HH (ICH8DH).

As usefull as this info may be, it doesn't help me. I guess what I would like to know now is what is the fastest CPU this Dell mb can handle?

Since the 9200 was available with a Q6600, that could be an upgrade path. A quick Google search shows that several owners have taken that upgrade path from the original E6300 @1.86 GHz. Are you sure your Core 2 is @1.66 GHz?

I made a mistake, it is 1.86 GHz.
I don't think there is a small fix to pump it up to 3GHz. So, now i have turned my attention towards building a comp. I know that it must run pretty fast so it thought that I would start with Intel E8500 @3.13GHz. As for a mb, I don't know how to pick 'em, yet (still reading the forums).

You can install any 775 processor, but the problem is your bios is most likely locked out, so overclocking and tweaking is for sure out on a branded machine. If you just want the cheapest upgrade path go ahead and get a faster core2 duo...if you were planning a new build around the same processor you have nothing to lose by trying it in the old machine first.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the information. I am pretty sure that I am going to attempt a build. Like I said, I will probably start with the Intel E8500, and build around that cpu.
Thanks again.
