I have powercolor 4870, I stuffed it into matx case. The fans are set on 50%, it idles at 60C - 64C. It's 8.12 catalyst drivers from AMD.

Any solutions to fix the heating issues. I even run it to 100% fan speed, it idles 59.

Should I get new heatsink for my 4870 or just apply some artic silver?

Try checking the temperatures with the side panel off your case, My reference Sapphire 4870 idles (checks CCC while typing) at 45 degrees at 35% speed.
I suspect you need to add extra fans, particularly an intake fan at the front of your case.

Those temps are way to high i just got myself a powercolor and it idles between 47 and 51,full load high 50 - to early 60s thats with a 60 % fan speed and monitoring with ati catlyist.Whatyour case im using a jeantech phong 2 with a fan at the front sucking in and 1 at the back sucking out also 1 on the side sucking in on the gfx card. Also check your cable management make sure its all neat and tidy and not blocking your fans. You might also want to try reinstalling your software or try using rivatuner. if all else fails send it back and demand a new 1.

This how I fixed it. I uninstalled the latest drivers for 4870 and installed the drivers that came with the cd. I also put an exhaust fan under the graphic card.

I think the heat is due to the fact that stuffed into a matx case.

For a cheap test i would recommend taking off your stock cooler and applying after market thermal compound ( Artic Silver 5, Ceramique, or my fav, Zalman thermal grease ). Give that a try and should see some temp drops. As always, check ventalation.

2 things get a better case, you can pick one up for about 40 quid and sort your cables out with cable ties you should then see it drop again.
