I want to build a machine for engineering use, I prefer stability for professional use and have no plans to overclock. I will install Red Had or CentOS linux (64-bit edition) with 4Gb of RAM and some midrange graphic card.
I have trouble to choose the correct motherboard. My initial choice was Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R but I am not sure about DDR2 memory: This processor has 1333 Mhz in the FSB and DDR-2 800 seems too weak!
I have in the market DD2 modules above 800Mhz, but would be a good choice? The network performance is important to me, and some boards offer two network interfaces that can be joined to have 2Gb connection with appropriate switch would be very welcome.
Can someone discuss this issue and suggest a good motherboard?
DDR2 800 MHz memory is fine and often more stable than overclocked memory. You could use faster memory, but the performance difference when not overclocking is minimal, i.e., you have to run benchmarks to detect the difference, if any. A 1333 MHz FSB requires 667 MHz memory. Spending a bit more on the graphics card or the CPU might be a better investment. If you need two NICs, go with the GA-EP45-UD3P and team them.
