I have a lot of ripped DVD videos and would like to watch them on my new HDTV. As you know regular video looks like crap on an HDTV. They make DVD players that do decent upconverting. Do any video cards do upconverting or is this strictly a codec function? Are some better than others?
That is mainly confined to the program being used, however if you have a crap video card, it won't do much for the picture either. look at the 4670 for a very good HTPC card. As for playing movies look for something similar to AnyDVDHD (this program is ok, but there are better out there).
FFDShow is an open source codec that has more features than you could ever need. I use the resizing, post-processing, and sharpening options cranked to get an "upconverted" image out of my .avi files. You can even make it work with vista media center. I also tweak my audio by re sampling all my audio up to 48000khz and mix it to 5.1 regardless of the input. The post-processing does wonders for deblocking the source file and it is fully customizable as to what your cpu can handle.
