failure to exit from system standby

My computer fails to exit system standby (control
panel/power options). (Win XP Home)
Advice very welcome.
Tried this query elsewhere, but no takers!

S and scroll to Standby.
Also, USB Devices sometimes are a problem. http://tinyurl.com/234mq
