Maximum length of cross over cable to connect 2 comp

Can any one please tell me till what distance can 2 computers communicate using a CAT 5 cross over cable...?

I connected 2 computers with a 5 meter cross over cable(CAT 5) it was Pinging with each other and i was able to access every thing . then i connected the same 2 computers with a 10 meter cross over cable(CAT 5) but it failed to ping with each other...

Can anyone help me out

There might be something wrong with your cable. The max length for CAT 5s, cross over and otherwise, is 100 meters.
